Why is there a need for external radiation protection experts?

There are several reasons why external radiation protection experts are needed:

  1. Independence:External experts are independent of the operators of the plants or facilities and can therefore objectively and neutrally assess whether the requirements for radiation protection are met.
  2. Expertise:External experts usually have special training and experience in the field of radiation protection and can therefore assess complex issues faster and more reliably.
  3. Regulation: Laws and regulations in the field of radiation protection are often complex and constantly changing. External experts can help companies and facilities meet these requirements and adapt to current regulations.
  4. Safety: External experts help ensure the safety of facilities and equipment that use ionizing radiation and minimize the risk of radiation exposure to the public and the environment.

Legal basis

Radiation protection when handling equipment for the generation of ionizing radiation

The Radiation Protection Ordinance StSV stipulates that companies that have a license for handling ionizing radiation (radioactive substances or X-ray equipment) must appoint a radiation protection expert. This person provides specifications, instructs and monitors implementation.

Radiation protection when using occupationally exposed persons in third-party companies

The Radiation Protection Ordinance StSV stipulates that companies wishing to employ staff in controlled zones of third-party companies or in their own laboratories require a permit from the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). In addition, they must appoint a radiation protection expert (StSV, Art. 18). This person is responsible for organizing radiation protection and informing the persons exposed to radiation.
